Vintage inspired clothing

When in Shanghai dressmaking is a must. The fabric markets are bursting with colourful fabrics and hundreds of dressmakers.

This dress really doesn’t need words does it!!!  It is based on a drawing of a 60s dress that I took to Shanghai.  When I first tried it on it didn’t fit quite right, so it was reworked to fit perfectly (at no extra cost ). The fabric was purchased in Melbourne at ‘Spotlight', and really works with this design I think.

Below is my all time favourite sun-dress in three different fabrics. It is copy of a 60’s dress I purchased over 20 years ago in an op-shop. All three fabrics are from Shanghai.

This lightweight A-line sundress is a 60’s copy. I purchased the original dress at Camberwell market.  I purchased 2 metres of the fabric in Melbourne and took it to Shanghai.

I had the skirt pictured below made in a tiny shop just near the hotel. I spotted the gorgeous berry colored cashmere when walking past. The skirt is fully lined with a similar coloured lining, and the skirt is trimmed with orange cashmere. The pockets are also orange. Cashmere is very popular in Shanghai.  It is sold as fabric, knitwear and in ready made clothing. The skirt is my design.

The top was purchased in Melbourne. It is beautifully handmade by a woman who’s label is called ‘Bobbins n Bliss’ (www.bobbinsnbliss.etsy.com). She is Melbourne based. I purchased it at a fantastic shop called ‘Mim found Ena’ at 239 High Street Northcote (facebook.com/MimFoundEna). They sell unique clothing, jewellery and ceramics.  The clothing is all handmade with new and salvaged fabrics; the clothes are really gorgeous. Some of their items are from local artists. It is well worth a visit!

This skirt is a simple long slim fitting A-Line.  It has no pockets.  I designed this one myself by drawing a picture and discussing the cut with the dressmaker. The fabric is from Shanghai.

The skirt is my design, with Marimekko inspired fabric.  The fabric was purchased in Melbourne at ‘Spotlight’ and taken over, as I loved it so much.  It is A-Line with big pockets.  I had two made, one for me and one for a girlfriend.

On my most recent trip I took over two items that I have had in my wardrobe for some time, but rarely wear as they needed significant alterations. This jacket is a original 60’s wool jacket that I think is fantastic.  I bought it from Camberwell market for next to nothing, but it needed the old scratchy white lining, which had yellowed, to be changed and 10cm to be taken off. I priced getting this work done in Melbourne and it was going to cost me a small fortune. So I took it over, as I had plenty of space in my suitcase and had the alterations done there. The workmanship is beyond perfect, and it is now my favouirite jacket, and I have rarely been out of it since returning to Melbourne.

In addition to the jacket, the green top was purchased at Camberwell market years ago and rarely worn.  It was basically too big, and also scratchy as it had no lining, but the design is gorgeous. It is by a Melbourne designer called ‘Monkhouse’.  So I chose my lining, was measured up to have it fitted to my measurements and now I wear it constantly. So I guess it is sort of a recycled  -  recycled piece!

The floral top below is made from fabric from a skirt which I originally purchased at Camberwell market. The skirt didn't fit so I had it remade into this top. The green fabric was added to give the top length. The top is based on the design of the A line dress in earlier photos.

I am more than happy to assist people in their choice of fabrics and design. If there are any pieces of clothing that catch your eye from my collection I will gladly bring them to Shanghai to be copied. Dressmakers in Shanghai are excellent at fitting clothes perfectly to your shape and size.

Please note these designs are based on vintage designs. They are not copies of contemporary clothing designs.
